Sureelee Shaam 2026: Celebrating Literature, Music, and Community Across Generations

On May 25, 2026, Ghazal Manch Surrey presented its annual Surmaee Shaam, bringing together hundreds of community members for an evening dedicated to Punjabi literature, music, and cultural celebration. Offered free of charge, the event welcomed people of all ages from teenagers and university students to seniors demonstrating Ghazal Manch Surrey’s commitment to making literary and performing arts accessible to everyone.
Guests were welcomed with complimentary tea, refreshments, and appetizers, creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere where people could connect through a shared appreciation of culture and the arts. Upon entering the venue, attendees had the opportunity to browse and purchase Punjabi books, including poetry collections, literary works, biographies, and research publications, supporting authors while promoting Punjabi language literacy and readership.
The evening opened with welcoming remarks by Rajwant Raj, followed by an overview of Ghazal Manch Surrey’s ongoing literary initiatives by Davinder Gautam. Their presentations highlighted the organization’s year-round efforts to preserve and promote Punjabi language, literature, and music while creating opportunities for both emerging and established artists.
A special acknowledgment was extended to community supporter and arts patron Jatinder Jay Minhas for his dedication and support in helping make the event possible.
The artistic program featured an inspiring blend of established performers and emerging talent. Poet and vocalist Karanjit Singh opened the evening with soulful renditions that immediately captivated the audience and set a reflective tone.
Representing the next generation of artists, Saanjh Jaura, a student at UBC Okanagan, impressed attendees with her confident stage presence, vocal versatility, and remarkable maturity, offering a glimpse into the bright future of Punjabi music.
Acclaimed vocalist Parakhjit Singh captivated listeners with his calm, soothing voice and heartfelt ghazal performances, earning enthusiastic applause and repeated cries of “Wah Wah.”
The evening concluded with renowned California-based singer Sukhdev Sahil, whose rich voice and masterful interpretations of ghazals, geets, tappas, and boliyan transformed local poetry into a memorable musical experience and provided a fitting finale to the event.
In keeping with Ghazal Manch Surrey’s vision of preserving literary heritage and celebrating artistic achievement, distinguished literary figures Gurdarshan Singh Badal, Amarjit Kaur Shant, and Avtar Kaur were honored with plaques and traditional shawls for their outstanding contributions to Punjabi literature.
The evening also featured the launch of three significant literary publications: Chupp da Sannata by Surinder Kaile, and Mitti Nu Pharol Jogiya and Labh Jaange Lal Guache by noted author and researcher Ashok Bansal Mansa, who was also recognized for his important contributions to documenting Punjabi literary history.
Throughout the evening, moderators Rajwant Raj, Davinder Gautam, Dashmesh Gill Feroz, and Sukhjit Kaur skillfully guided the program, connecting performances, literary discussions, and recognitions through thoughtful commentary.
A particularly encouraging aspect of Surmaee Shaam 2026 was the strong participation of youth, students, emerging artists, seniors, and community volunteers. By bringing together multiple generations in one shared cultural space, the event fostered mentorship, cultural learning, community belonging, and meaningful intergenerational exchange.
As the evening concluded, Ghazal Manch Surrey President Jaswinder thanked the artists, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and audience members whose contributions made the event possible. The overwhelming appreciation shown by attendees reaffirmed Ghazal Manch Surrey’s growing role as a leader in literary and cultural programming in British Columbia.
More than a concert, Surmaee Shaam 2026 was a celebration of artistic excellence, cultural preservation, and community connection.
