After completing pre-engineering from DAV College in Jalandhar, Gurmeet continued his studies and completed a mechanical engineering degree in 1987. He worked as a service engineer and as an assistant engineer for Hindustan hydraulics and Jagatjit Industries. While attending DAV college in 1982, Gurmeet started to write poetry, but he did not retain his poetry at that time.
In 1991, Gurmeet immigrated to Canada, and this is where he pursued his interest in poetry again. Gurmeet joined local Punjabi literary organizations such as Kendri Lekhari Sabha and Vancouver Lekhak Manch. He started to compile his poetry in 2001 and he continued to write poetry in the format of songs until 2015. In 2017, Gurmeet was introduced to ustad Krishan Bhanot, who took him under his wing, mentored him in the composition of Arooz and mechanism of Behar. Therefore, Gurmeet was now able to write poetry in the format of ghazal.
Gurmeet joined Ghazal Manch Surrey in 2018, since then he is a proud member, and he appreciates the opportunity of being associated with some of the most talented ghazal poets. He continued to improve on his skills in writing ghazal poetry and learning new techniques with the support of the team. Gurmeet is currently working on his ghazal poetry book, and he is planning to publish it in August of 2024.
